AKWA STARLETS HOME GROUND CLOSED FOR SYNTHETIC GRASSING

The Uyo Township Stadium has been shut down to allow for the installation of an Astro turf.

The stadium has had a natural grass football pitch since inception. However, there have been concerns over its condition in the last few years- and now the government has decided to install artificial grass.

The closure of the facility, according to the Commissioner of Youth and Sport, Sir Monday Uko, is expected to last for two weeks.

“I can tell you we’ve closed down the Uyo Township Stadium to prepare for artificial turf,” Sir Ebong said.

“In the next two weeks, I’m sure that place would be adorned with artificial turf, so that all the [Akwa Starlets, Ibom Youths and Ibom Angels] teams can return to play their matches there.”

Sir Ebong, who spoke to news men after Wednesday’s Nigeria Women Football League match between Ibom Angels and Abia Angels at West Itam Model Sports Centre, reiterated the commitment of Akwa Ibom State government to upgrade of sports facilities.

“The state government is very serious about upgrading [sports] facilities around the state because as we speak, we have more than five teams that are playing in the [national] leagues.”

Goals from Blessing Okpe and Charity Reuben earned Ibom Angels a 2-1 win over Ann Chiejine’s Abia Angels.
