Fifteen Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) referees could be handed suspensions for poor performance and misconduct.
According to an official statement, the match officials involved in five of Sunday’s matchday 14 fixtures, namely, Goround vs Enugu Rangers, Heartland vs Nasarawa United, Yobe Desert Stars vs Enyimba, Lobi Stars vs Rivers United and FC Ifeanyi Ubah vs Plateau United “have been recommended for suspension from further officiating of matches pending full investigation into their performances.”
The match officials’ conduct and performance were deemed unsatisfactory by the League Management Company. They were found guilty of two offenses, — questionable decisions and late submission of match report.
The match officials in charge of the fixture between Goround and Enugu Rangers in Omoku — Maroof Afolabi (Kwara), Akinsanya Segun (Oyo) and Alhaji Alhaji (Kogi) — are among the referees recommended for suspension. In the game, the home side needed a questionable penalty on 93 minutes to earn a point.
Also recommended for suspension is the Ondo trio of O.O Awosakin, Busayo Ogunyamodi and I.O Awosakin, who handled the Heartland vs Nasarawa United match. Heartland, who are fighting to get out of the bottom four, were awarded two penalties — the second inside the fifth minute of added time.
For the Lobi Stars vs Rivers United match, the officials recommended for suspension are centre referee Folusho Ajayi (Oyo) and her assistants, Aina Idris (Lagos) and Abdulganiyu Abdulmalik (Bauchi).
Further recommended for suspension are officials in the FC Ifeanyiubah vs Plateau United. They are centre referee Awalu Rabiu (Zamfara), Adamu Zakari (Jigawa) and Badamosi Badamosi (Jigawa).
The last set of officials recommended for suspension are the referees who officiated in the Yobe Stars vs Enyimba International match — Dankano A. Mohammed (Kogi), Mohammed Surakat and Toyin Sunday, both from Kwara State council.
