New Super Eagles invitee Samuel Kalu was one of the top performers as Bordeaux sealed a place in the group stages of the Europa League with a 2-0 victory over KAA Gent in Thursday’s play-off second leg game.
For the second straight game, Kalu, 21, won FC Girondins de Bordeaux a penalty.
Having played out a goalless draw in the first leg, Bordeaux needed a win to progress.
Guinean striker François Kamano set the French side to the path of victory when he finished off a beautiful team move. Jimmy Briand then secured the win from the penalty spot after Kalu was adjudged to have been brought down.
The playmaker — who, interestingly joined Bordeaux from the Belgian club this month — proved a handful for the visitors.
Kalu was in action for 83 minutes, while his compatriot, Taiwo Awoniyi — who was in Gent’s starting XI — lasted 63 minutes.
