Enyimba dismiss Mfon Udoh quit claims

Enyimba have rubbished reports that Mfon Udoh has quit the club after the player failed to agree a contract extension with the Aba club, insisting the striker’s deal with the two-time Champions League winners ‘runs till the end of the season’.

Reports on Thursday claimed the all-time top goalscorer in a single Nigeria Professional Football League season has left Enyimba after five years with the club.

The player himself told 234football he has departed the club following the expiration of his contact at the end of the 2017-18 season.

“Yes, I’ve left the club (Enyimba). I need a new challenge. I’ve to move on with my career,” he said.

Enyimba, however, have denied the player’s claims, saying the 26-year-old was only suspended ‘for gross misconduct and indiscipline’.

“He has not quit the club; he was suspended indefinitely for gross misconduct and indiscipline. His contract is not over,” the club’s media boss, Farriel Alaputa, revealed.

“I read a report somewhere saying his contract expired at the end of the NPFL season. So, I don’t understand who signs a contract like that, where a player plays in the league and would not play in the Aiteo Cup. That alone shows that he’s not being truthful.

Udoh was reportedly sent packing from the Enyimba camp following an altercation with club Chairman, Felix Ayansi-Agu, on Saturday, and did not travel with his team-mates for Sunday’s Confederation Cup clash with Rwandan side, Rayon Sports.

The club refused to confirm claims Udoh had a fall-out with Anyasi-Agu nor give specifics but hinted that there was a dispute which nearly escalated.

“He misbehaved and tried to cause problems in the camp and so, the management took the decision to suspend him indefinitely. We wanted to keep quiet about it, that’s why there was no official statement from the club,” Alaputa continued.

“Maybe people have seen him in town and have been asking why he did not travel with the club [for the game against Rayon Sports], and what he came up with is that his contract has expired. So, that’s not truthful; he was suspended.”

Udoh joined Enyimba from Akwa United in 2014.

He holds the record for most goals (23) scored in a single NPFL season — a feat he achieved in his first season at the Aba club.

In 2017, he was made the captain of the club following the departure of Chinedu Udoji to Kano Pillars•
