Ligue 1 club FC Bordeaux’s diabolical form continued as they lost 2-1 to Zenit St Petersburg in the Europa League, with Nigeria international Samuel Kalu playing the full 90 minutes.

The playmaker was not the only Nigerian that was given a starting role on Thursday, though. Stephen Odey was in FC Zürich’s starting XI.

Let’s look at how Nigerians fared in Europe’s second club football competition last night.

Group A

Stephen Odey scored FC Zürich’s winning goal in the Swiss club’s 3-2 win over Bundesliga outfit, Bayer Leverkusen at the Stadion Letzigrund.

The former MFM FC forward played from start to finish on Thursday — his third straight Europa league appearance for Ludovic Magnin side.

Odey flicked Pa Modou Jagne’s cross into the far post in the 78th minute moments after receiving tactical orders from Zürich’s assistant coach.

The 20-year-old striker took his tally to seven in all competitions, which includes three each in the Swiss Super League and Swiss Cup – Schweitzer Pokal .

Zurich sit top of the group with nine points after winning all of their matches.

Group B

Samuel Adegbenro made his first Europa league appearance of the season for Rosenberg, coming on as a substitute in the club’s 3-0 loss at RB Salzburg.

The winger, 23, was brought on by Coach Rini Coolen to replace Yan Erik de Langley 21 minutes into the second half.

Adegbenro’s season has been plagued by injury. He returned from a long lay-off last month and has been trying to regain his place in the team.

The Eliteserien club have yet to register a point in their group.

Group C

Peter Olayinka was an unused substitute, as his Czech club, Slavia Prague pipped hosts FC Copenhagen 1-0.

The 22-year-old forward’s last appearance for Slavia in a European competition was in the 1-1 draw with Dynamo Kiev in the Champions League group stage qualifying match in August.

In the other Group C tie, Super Eagles winger, Samuel Kalu was in action from start to finish, as FC Bordeaux were condemned to a third straight loss in the Europa league, with Zenit St Petersburg coming from a goal down to beat the Ligue 1 club.

Artem Dzyuba and Daler Kuzyaev’s scored to hand the Russia Premier League side a 2-1 win after Jimmy Briand had opened the scoring in the 26th minute.

Kalu, who joined the club in August in a $16m deal, went close to scoring with a long- range shot in the first half, before being denied by Andrey Lunev on two occasions in the second half.

Thursday’s game was the 20-year-old’s fifth Europa League outing for Bordeaux — which includes two Europa league qualification fixtures.

Kalu’s Bordeaux are rocked at bottom of Group C — without a point.

Group E

Alex Iwobi replaced Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang with four minutes left on the clock as Arsenal beat their hosts, Sporting Lisbon 1-0, courtesy of Danny Welbeck’s well-taken goal.

Group G

Nigeria youth international, Samuel Chukwueze assisted Gerard Moreno to net Villarreal’s last goal in the 5-0 drubbing of their Austrian visitors, Rapid Vienna at the Stadio de La Cerámica.

Chukwueze laid a pass to the Spanish striker, who timed his move to perfection to control the ball before firing past Richard Strebinger.

It was the 2015 FIFA Under-17 World Champion’s first assist and third straight Europa league appearance this season.

Villarreal are level with Rangers on point, but placed top of the group, thanks to a superior goal difference.

Victor Moses played a greater part of the second half for Chelsea in the London club’s 3-1 win over visiting Bate Borisov to maintain their top spot in Group with nine points.

Coach Maurizio Sarri brought on the Nigerian international for Willian Borges in the 56th minute — three minutes after Ruben Loftus Cheek completed his first hat-trick for Chelsea.

On the domestic scene, Moses has racked up only 26 minutes of playing time — in two substitute appearances for the Blues.

Moses, who announced his retirement from international football last month, has made just one start this season — the 2-1 win over Liverpool at Anfield in the Carabao League cup on September 26.
