NNL request shift in playoffs kickoff date

The Nigeria National League have asked the Nigeria Football Federation to shift the kickoff date of the NNL promotion playoffs which was scheduled to begin on January 3.

The playoffs, initially billed to hold in Aba in December, was moved to January 3 after five of the eight clubs boycotted the tournament.

The boycotting clubs insisted on a direct promotion for the top two teams from the four NNL groups.

“Remo Stars Football Club (RSFC) will not be honouring the upcoming Bet9ja Nigeria National League Super 8 competition scheduled to hold on the 15th of December, 2018, in Aba, Abia State,” One of the five clubs, Remo Stars, informed the NFF of their withdrawal from the tournament in a statement.

“On the 24th of November, decisions were reached by the NNL league board during the Annual General Assembly (AGA) held at NERA Hotel Jabi, Abuja indicating all eight (8) teams will be promoted to the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL).

“Following the earlier decision made, we (Remo Stars) have now noticed that the Nigeria National League (NNL) is no longer going by the earlier decision made to promote all eight (8) and we have therefore decided on our part not to honour the scheduled NNL Super 8 in Aba.”

After a meeting between the NNL and top NFF officials in Lagos, though, an agreement was reached, and the kickoff was moved to Thursday, January 3.

However, that kickoff date, it appears, will be moved again, as the NNL have written the NFF requesting that the start of the Super 8 be shifted to Saturday, January 5.

The shift, the NNL said, is to give the concerned clubs time to “effect the resolution of the meeting.”

The letter read in part: “Sequel to our meeting on 27th December, 2018 held in Lagos we hereby request for the shift of date for the commencement of the Super 8 from the 3rd to 5th January, 2019.

“This is to enable the concerned club’s to effect the resolution of the meeting in good time.”
