Henry Onyekuru nets hat-trick as Galatasaray humiliate Ankaragücü

Henry Onyekuru set the Türk Telekom Arena alight with his first career hat-trick, as Galatasaray thrashed visiting Ankaragücü 6-0 in a Super Lïg matchday 18 tie on Saturday.

The 21-year-old scored once in the first half and twice after the break, taking his league goals tally to nine for the season.

The hosts took the lead in the first minute. Onyekuru’s left-footed effort inside the penalty area bounced off a defender and the ball fell kindly to Sinan Gumus, who smashed in the rebound to open the score for the Istanbul-based club.

On 21 minutes, the advantage was doubled. Badou Ndiaye sent a short pass to Onyekuru. The on-loan Everton man controlled the ball, managed to stay on his feet after skipping past two Ankaragücü defenders before slotting a left-footed effort into the far post.

Five minutes later, Gümüş scored his second of the day, sending Mariano’s cut-back into the top left corner.

In a four-minute spell, Onyekuru added two goals to complete his first career hat-trick, which took his season tally to nine in 16 Super Lig appearances.

The former Eupen striker controlled Fernando’s pass with his left foot, before poking a low shot into the far post, two minutes before the hour mark. Four minutes later, Sofiane Feghouli’s cross from the right, found the Nigeria international on the left side of the six-yard box, and he wasted no time, powering into the roof of the net to complete his first career hat-trick.

Badou N’Diaye then volleyed in to complete the rout and seal a league double against the Ankara side.

“Beginnings are very important. It’s a good thing that we started the second half of the season and 2019 with a big win,” Onyekuru told Galatasaray.org.

“I try to do my best, even in the right wing, or on the left wing according to the instruction of my coach.

“It’s a good start, I hope it goes on like this.”

Onyekuru’s compatriot, Nduka Ozokwo, 30, also featured in the game. The former Nigeria U20 international made his first start of season, replacing Kenan Ozer at the half-hour mark.

The win shot Fatih Terim’s side to second spot on the log with 32 points, three adrift of leaders Istanbul Basaksehir, who travel to Trabzonspor on Sunday.
