Nigerian players abroad: Azubuike scores first Rizespor goal in win at Bursaspor

Okechukwu Azubuike scored his first goal for Rizespor in a 2-0 win at Bursaspor on Saturday.

Playing his second game since joining the Rize club from Egyptian club Pyramid FC, Azubuike doubled his side’s advantage after Moroccan midfielder Aatif Chahechouhe had scored a 12th-minute opener.

Goalkeeper Muhammed Sengezer palmed a shot into the path of the former Nigeria U23 team captain, and the midfielder made the most of the situation, controlling the ball before picking his spot.

The result moved Okan Buruk’s side into 12th spot in the Süper Lig standings, a point clear of the drop zone.

Buruk named three Nigerians — Okechukwu Azubuike, Aminu Umar and another January signing Chidozie Awaziem — in the starting lineup. Umar was replaced after 76 minutes, but his compatriots played the full 90 minutes.

His opposite number Samet Aybaba left out Nigeria international Shehu Abdullahi from Green Crocodiles starting XI. Shehu, though, came on as early as the 30th minute following injury to Ramazan Keskin.
