Villarreal fight against relegation received a boost, as Samuel Chukwueze came off the bench to inspire Javier Calleja’s side to a 2-0 win at Levante on Sunday.
Left out of the starting lineup after playing the entirety of the Europa League clash with Zenith Petersburg on Thursday, Chukwueze was called on in the 63rd minute in the La Liga game with neither side scoring.
The teenage striker put in a man-of-the-match performance, doubling the lead after playing a part in the build-up to the first goal.
Villarreal waited till the third minute of second-half added time to get the breakthrough. Chukwueze released Vicente Iborra, and the Spaniard sent a low cross into the box. Pier Rober attempted to stop the ball from getting to a Villarreal player, but turned the ball into his own net.
Three minutes later, Chukwueze sealed the points, curling an unstoppable shot into the far post from the edge of the box after receiving a pass from Santi Cazorla, taking his league goals tally to three and six in all competitions for the season.
The win moved the Yellow Submarines a point clear of the drop zone.
Chukwueze’s compatriot Moses Simon played all of 90 minutes for Levante.
Simon saw his second-half effort saved.
On Saturday, Kenneth Omeruo made his 10th straight 90-minute appearance for Leganes, as Mauricio Pellegrino lost 1-0 to Atletico Madrid.
