Crotone’s hopes of Serie B survival received a boost after Nigeria international Simeon Nwankwo netted twice to hand them a 2-1 at bottom side Carpi on Saturday.
The striker scored his second brace in three games to take his league goals tally to 11 for the season.
Nwankwo, 26, opened the scoring from the penalty spot following a hand-ball incident, and then rounded the Carpi goalkeeper Riccardo Piscitelli to score after latching onto Niccolo Zanellato’s excellent through ball.
Fabrizio Poli pulled one back when he volleyed in from close range after an initial attempt came back off the cross bar.
Overlooked by Nigeria coach Gernot Rohr for the games against Seychelles and Egypt, Nwankwo has been in good scoring form in the last few weeks.
He has found the back of the net five times in the last three games.
It remains to be seen if the World Cup player will be recalled to the Nigeria team ahead of the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations, which will hold in Egypt.
